Linklaters celebrates Black History Month

19 October 2011

Linklaters celebrated Black history and culture at the firms’s first Black History Month event last night.

The event, 'Inspired to Succeed', featured guest speaker the Rt. Hon. Baroness Scotland of Asthal PC, QC, and was hosted by Linklaters’ Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Network in association with the Black Solicitors Network, City Branch. Black History Month is dedicated to promoting knowledge of Black culture, heritage and history and disseminating information on positive contributions Black people have made to British society.

Baroness Scotland has held various posts in Government and became the first female Attorney General in the post's 700 year history in 2007, a post she served until 2010.  She introduced the International Criminal Court Bill, which sought to ratify the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court into UK law and was responsible for major reform of the criminal justice system. She is the Patron of the Corporate Alliance Against Domestic Violence and the Global Foundation for the Elimination of Domestic Violence, and the joint Patron of Missio.

Tom Shropshire, head of Linklaters’ BAME Network and a partner in the firm’s mainstream corporate practice said:

“Black history, talent and culture merit celebration and we are proud to have hosted our first event for Black History Month. We were particularly thrilled to welcome Baroness Scotland, who embodies so much of what we sought to celebrate.”

This event builds on a broad programme of work encouraging and celebrating diversity both within Linklaters and with clients. Previous events in the programme have included the launch of the firm’s LGB network, hosted by Evan Davis, and an event supporting interfaith discussions, ‘Faith in the City.’
