Supporting the wider market

As we support our clients with their most challenging legal work, we help shape and support the legal and regulatory environment in which they operate by providing input to consultations and by advising legislators and regulators directly.

Our involvement in the biggest, most complex and most innovative legal work places us at the cutting edge of market practice and the setting of new norms and standards. We take our role in shaping the legal and regulatory environments in which our clients operate seriously, by advising them on proposed changes to the law, responding on their behalf to relevant consultations and advising legislators and regulators directly. We also contribute our knowledge for the benefit of the markets in which we operate by sitting on panels or committees, conducting research, teaching and writing books and articles.

For example, over the past year we have acted as lead adviser to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association on revised Definitions which form the market standard basis for documenting over-the-counter equity derivative transactions. We advised a major global bank on the first ever Indian listing by a foreign company and advised on the biggest ever inward investment into Africa from India.

We have also been working with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in the UK, as it switches from a rules-based approach to “outcomes-focused regulation”, whereby firms and lawyers are obliged to achieve certain outcomes for their clients, but the manner in which the outcomes are achieved is left to individual firms to decide according to the nature of their practice and client base.
