Minimum wage ordinance: are you prepared?
On 1 May 2011, Hong Kong's minimum wage system will come into effect. Some commentators have labelled this the most serious legislative incursion into Hong Kong's free market economy to date. The minimum wage is HKD28 per hour, but the mechanical provisions of the MWO mean that the effective minimum wage is higher.
The purpose of this newsletter is to alert employers to aspects of the minimum wage laws that are likely to impact in ways that may not have originally been foreseen by the legislators. We discuss below these potential implications and the issues that employers need to consider prior to the implementation of the new minimum wage laws.
