Education and qualifications


James primarily represents creditors, debtors, shareholders, officeholders and other stakeholders in major corporate debt restructurings, distressed acquisitions and formal insolvencies in the UK, Europe, Asia and Africa, advising on both transactional and dispute resolution matters.

In addition, James has considerable experience representing clients in dispute resolution matters arising out of corporate joint ventures, debt financings and derivatives.

Work highlights

James has led on many significant restructurings. These include advising:

  • the syndicate of senior secured revolving and guarantee facility lenders to Galapagos Bidco and its subsidiaries in connection with their sale and financial restructuring
  • the joint administrators of Debenhams plc in relation to the enforcement sale of its subsidiaries and issues arising in its administration proceedings
  • the syndicate of senior secured revolving and term lenders to the BMI Healthcare group in connection with the group’s sale and financial restructuring
  • the joint special administrators of Beaufort Asset Clearing Services Limited in connection with its court-approved distribution plan for return of client assets and issues arising in its special administration proceeding 
  • the ad hoc committee of unsecured noteholders of Towergate Insurance in connection with its financial restructuring via “toggle” schemes of arrangement for secured and unsecured noteholder classes
  • a member of the senior creditor group of litigants in the complex “waterfall” court proceedings in the Lehman UK estate (Waterfall I and Parts A, B and C of Waterfall II)
