Linklaters appoints new global head of competition

Linklaters has appointed Jonas Koponen as global head of its competition/antitrust practice.  He begins his four year term from 1 July 2015.

Jonas is an international competition lawyer known for his strategic advice and hands-on approach, making him an ideal choice to lead Linklaters’ elite global competition practice.  He is based in Linklaters’ Brussels office, where he has practised for the past 12 years, having previously spent time in London and Stockholm.

Jonas advises many of the world’s largest industry-leading companies on their most challenging competition law matters. This includes coordinating merger control review of complex M&A transactions as well as defending multi-national corporations, including immunity and leniency applicants, in global investigations of potential anti-competitive conduct.

He also contributes actively to the international competition policy debate, not only as an author and speaker at conferences, but also as a member of the International Bar Association’s task forces regarding antitrust in China and India. Jonas was an early non-governmental advisor to the International Competition Network, and has contributed to projects such as the organisation’s pioneering Recommended Practices for Merger Notification and Procedures.

Jonas succeeds Michael Cutting, who has led the global competition team since 2011.  Michael will now return to full-time client practice.  Sir Christopher Bellamy, widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s most influential competition lawyers, remains as chairman of the practice.

Simon Davies, firmwide managing partner of Linklaters, said:

“In a world where competition law increasingly influences critical aspects of global corporate and commercial strategy, competition issues have become increasingly front of mind for our clients.  Jonas’ global outlook and depth of experience, as well as his established place in the international competition community, make him ideally suited to consolidating and further developing our pre-eminent competition practice, with the support of the rest of the team.”
