Overview

Bruce advises on lending, restructuring and insolvency matters both for borrowers/debtors and for lenders/creditors. He has particular expertise in the application of corporate finance techniques to distressed debt situations, and is one of the leading practitioners of English creditor schemes of arrangement.

Bruce focusses particularly on cross-border restructurings, and has been involved in many of the most high-profile restructurings in Europe since the global financial crisis. Bruce also advises various of the firm’s key corporate clients on their general banking and finance matters.

In 2010, Bruce was seconded to BP as Treasury counsel to assist with financial consequences of the Deepwater Horizon incident. In 2001, he was seconded to Barclays Capital to work in the bank’s leveraged finance team.

Work highlights

Bruce has led on, or been a key adviser in, a number of major debt restructurings. His experience includes advising:

  • the business partners of Card Protection Plan and Affinion on the groundbreaking consumer schemes of arrangement used as a tool to provide redress for alleged mis-selling of retail financial products
  • Towergate Insurance on its £1.1bn debt restructuring
  • Eircom on its €4bn debt restructuring, the largest ever Irish examinership case, a process in Irish law enabling a company to restructure with the approval of the High Court
  • the ad hoc committee of bondholders on the US$1.4bn debt restructuring of Codere, the Spanish gaming company
  • the lenders on the debt restructuring of the UK M6 toll road

 

Professional experience

Bruce is a member of the Insolvency Lawyers’ Association and the City of London Solicitors’ Company.

Education and qualifications

Bruce graduated with a BA (Hons) in history from Pembroke College in 1994, Cambridge University and then studied for a postgraduate diploma in law at City University, London and for a postgraduate diploma in legal practice (LPC) at the College of Law, London.
