Experience

Melvin is the Head of the Dispute Resolution practice in Asia. He has practiced in Asia for over 20 years and has extensive commercial litigation and arbitration experience, regularly advising many of the global financial institutions and corporations on their most sensitive and complex disputes and regulatory investigations in the region. He also co-heads the firm's restructuring and insolvency practice in Asia. Melvin is admitted in England & Wales, Hong Kong and Singapore and is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Melvin’s experience includes:

  • advising Goldman Sachs in multi-jurisdictional proceedings relating to the Rightway Real Estate Group
  • acting for Ernst & Young in proceedings brought by the Securities and Futures Commission for production of audit work paper
  • acting for Shanghai Industrial Holdings in a dispute relating to their take-over of Neo-China Land
  • acting for Blackrock in a dispute relating to a RMB 1.7bn CB issued by Hidili Industry International
  • advising a U.S. hedge fund on a dispute relating to their investment in an Indian infrastructure group
  • acting for HSBC International Trustee in a multi-million dollar proceedings relating to the RREEF China Commercial Trust
  • for CVCi in a USD multi-million dispute relating to their investment in Ports International
  • advising the Big 4 firms of auditors in various regulatory inquiries relating to the investigation by the SEC into reverse takeovers by Chinese issuers
  • advising Moody’s on the enforcement action taken by the SFC in relation to a Special Comment report published by Moody’s including proceedings before the Securities and Futures Appeal Tribunal
  • advising a global bank on its reporting obligations under Hong Kong and Singapore laws in respect of suspicious transactions undertaken by its Singapore listed customer
  • advising a global bank on an investigation by the HKMA into alleged mis-selling of investment products to its retail customers
  • advising a global bank in a joint investigation by the HKMA and SFC into concurrent derivative transactions undertaken by the FX and Rates desk in HK and Singapore
  • acting for a Middle Eastern private equity firm in an ICC arbitration involving USD multi-million damages claim arising out of a shareholder dispute pertaining to wind energy assets in Inner Mongolia
  • acting for a major U.S. energy company in London-seated arbitration proceedings relating to a US$80m claim arising out of its oil and gas projects in India
  • advising several global financial institutions in relation to regulatory investigations concerning their role as sponsors in initial public offerings
  • acting for a leading global financial services on a highly confidential regulatory investigation in China concerning suspected corruption and misappropriation of state assets
