Experience

Michael is the head of the Banking and Finance practice in Moscow. He has a variety of experience in advising on the largest, innovative and most complex financings in Russia to date. Michael specialises in acquisition financings, real estate financings, private placements, project financings, securitisations, pre-export financings, derivative transactions, ECA financings, asset finance, syndicated loans, insolvencies and workouts. Examples of significant matters include advising:

  • more than 30 banks on the restructuring of various syndicated debt facilities for Mechel, one of Russia’s largest metals and mining groups
  • a variety of international banks and corporations on the effect of the EU and US sanctions imposed in 2014 on sectors of the Russian economy
  • the arrangers of US$31bn loan facilities for Rosneft to finance its acquisition of TNK-BP – the largest ever financing in Russia
  • Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation as facility agent and 19 mandated lead arrangers on the US$3.13bn syndicated facility to VTB Bank – the largest ever syndicated loan to a Russian bank
