Pro Bono and the Rule of Law

At Linklaters we believe that the rule of law is essential to human progress, underpinning economic activity and the development of society. It is at the heart of what we do for our clients. Our work as international lawyers enables the world of business to benefit from the rule of law, and the integrity, fairness and certainty that it brings.

We also feel a responsibility, as part of our purpose and consistent with our values, to seek to assist in the preservation and advancement of the rule of law in other contexts as well. By building legal skills and capacity globally we can help to drive more effective, accountable and inclusive institutions.

We have supported the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law since its inception, and we provide free legal support on rule of law projects to 21 not for profit organisations globally.

Recent highlights of our pro bono work in this space include:

  • Impact – informing Acid Survivors Trust International’s campaign for crucial changes to the law to tackle acid violence.
  • Innovation – inspiring students at Kings College London to innovate creative solutions to  global rule of law challenges.
  • Scale – furthering the rule of law by creating case digests and an index of the entire case law of Liberia through Lawyers Without Borders, so that judges can apply case precedent.
  • As with all our pro bono work, we have a strong focus on impact - selecting practical projects where our efforts and time will make the most effective difference. Using the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals we are seeking to grow the impact of our activity through greater collaboration.

“The impact of the Liberian case digests would truly not have been possible without the commitment, vision and skill of a superlative team at Linklaters…Thanks to Linklaters, these reference materials will allow us to work together with our Liberian colleagues towards better legal governance.”
Christina Storm, Founder and Director, Lawyers Without Borders
“I can say with some confidence that Linklaters’ work has very much had an impact in influencing policy within government but also contributed enormously in the awareness raising work we have conducted.”
Jaf Shah, Chief Executive, Acid Survivors Trust International.
