Competition Commission of India to be given powers to review mergers in June 2011

After years of debate, the Indian Government recently announced that the Competition Commission of India will be given powers to approve or prohibit certain acquisitions, mergers and amalgamations. The new powers take effect on 1 June 2011 and will also affect transactions concluded, but not completed, before that date.
