Overview
Matthew is a Partner in the Derivatives and Structured Products group. He is a specialist in structured transactions, spanning repackagings, structured notes programmes and OTC derivatives across a variety of asset classes.
He is a leading practitioner in the synthetic risk sharing / capital relief trades market; he advises several investors and banks on synthetic securitisation transactions in the form of notes, credit default swaps, financial guarantee and unfunded structures.
He also has extensive experience in bespoke financing transactions, in the form of repos, TRSs and margin loans and equity financings.
Matthew was seconded to Lehman Brothers International (Europe) in 2004 and to Merrill Lynch International in 2006, which provided him with insight into the internal operations of banks and bespoke banking products.
Work Highlights
Matthew has advised on many market-leading structured capital markets deals. These include:
- PGGM, the Dutch asset management company, on its risk-sharing deal with Santander covering a €2.3bn portfolio of small-business loans
- The investor on Project Grasshopper, a synthetic securitisation of a reference portfolio of sustainable energy project finance loans (the first 100% green SRT transaction)
- Renaissance Re on Project Vale, an innovative SRT transaction for Bank of Ireland
- A bank client on a capital relief trade involving the purchase of protection over a USD 1,250,000,000 portfolio of derivative contracts
- A bank client on the transfer of its client contracts and financial market infrastructure to a European affiliate in connection with Brexit
- Several arrangers on the transfer and placement, via repackaged notes, of long-dated inflation swaps with utility companies
- PricewaterhouseCoopers, the administrators of Lehman Brothers International (Europe), on the unwind of derivatives, repos and stock loans
Education and qualifications
Matthew studied law with French at the University of Nottingham.
He speaks English and French.
