Overview

Doug is an English-qualified managing associate in the Amsterdam banking practice. He acts on a wide range of English and Dutch law financing matters, advising both borrowers and lenders on general syndicated  corporate finance, real estate finance, leveraged finance and fund finance. He has a particular focus on English law governed matters involving Dutch parties. 

Doug has insight into the broader European legal market, having worked in England, the Netherlands and France. He works closely with firms and offices in other jurisdictions to provide English legal advice to clients around the world, for example in Scandinavia, Belgium and South Africa.

Doug spent four months on secondment to ING’s lending legal team, advising on a broad array of investment grade and leveraged finance deals. Doug trained at Linklaters London before relocating to Amsterdam to join the banking team in 2018.

Work highlights:

  • Accell Group: advising the lenders on KKR’s public to private bid for the Accell Group.
  • Koninklijke KPN: acting for the lenders on KPN’s €1bn sustainability-linked revolving credit facility.
  • CBRE Investment Management: acting for certain CBREIM real estate investment funds as borrowers on a range of fund level revolving credit, term and bridge facilities.
  • Carlyle Credit Opportunities: acting for Carlyle as lender on a sponsor-backed acquisition of a Dutch packaging company.
  • Koninklijke Vopak N.V.: acting for the lenders on Vopak’s EUR €1bn sustainability-linked syndicated RCF, and bilateral facilities.
  • Nuveen Real Estate: advising Nuveen as borrower on the financing of the Roermond outlet centre and development of the Sugar City outlet centre in Amsterdam.

Professional experience

Doug joined the Linklaters Amsterdam office in 2018, after initially training as a solicitor at Linklaters London.

Before joining Linklaters, Doug was a legal consultant in the regulatory teams of two major US banks, and spent time working in the legal division of the Council of Europe.

Doug is a member of the Amsterdam DE&I Committee, and ESG Committee. He has given presentations for clients on sustainability-linked and green loans, and on real estate finance.

Doug has lived and worked in several jurisdictions, including England, the Netherlands, France and Egypt.

Education and qualifications

Doug obtained an LLB in law from Durham University in 2012, and an LLM in public international law from Leiden University in 2014. 

Doug is qualified in England & Wales as a Solicitor, and registered with the Dutch bar under article 16h of the Advocatenwet.

He speaks English and Dutch.
