Overview

Geoff advises on all types of commercial disputes, regulatory investigations and internal investigations. A significant amount of Geoff's experience is in advising pension funds (employers, trustees and representative beneficiaries) in the High Court and Court of Appeal, as well as in disputes with the Pensions Regulator.

Work Highlights
  • Advising the Arcadia/Taveta parties in the high-profile BHS regulatory dispute with the Pensions Regulator, and ultimate settlement and advising Arcadia on subsequent investigations by the Insolvency Service.
  • Successfully defending the trustee of the Granada Supplementary Pension Scheme in the Court of Appeal in relation to a claim by Granada that security arrangements set up under a ‘top up’ scheme contravene the Companies Act 1985 requirements for shareholder approval and as a result the security held by the trustee must be released.
  • Advising the administrators of Lehman Brothers International (Europe) in a dispute over a financial support direction sought to be imposed by the Pensions Regulator. This was settled after going to the Upper Tribunal.
  • Acting for Southern Water in a regulatory dispute over the threatened exercise for the first time of scheme funding powers by the Pensions Regulator.
  • Advising the Trustee ofthe Barclays Bank UK Retirement Fund in respect of the bank's proposals for compliance with ring-fencing obligations including making submissions to the Court in the sanction hearing.

Professional experience

Geoff is a member of the Association of Pensions Lawyers Pensions Litigation Committee. He is a regular speaker at industry conferences such as the PLSA Investment Conference and the Pensions and Benefits UK Conference and is frequently quoted in the pensions industry press in relation to all litigation matters.

Education and qualifications

Geoff studied Classics at New College, Oxford. He is fluent in English and Japanese.
