Overview

Phill advises underwriters and issuers on a broad range of international capital markets transactions and products. He has specialist knowledge of medium term note programmes, straight debt issues, convertible and exchangeable bonds, liability management exercises, green bonds and regulatory capital transactions. He has particular expertise in Islamic finance and sukuk issues.

Before moving to Singapore, Phill was based in the firm’s offices in Tokyo (2003-2005), London (2001-2003, 2006-2007 and 2008-2009) and Moscow (2007-2008).

Work Highlights

Phill has worked on many market-leading transactions. These include advising on:

  • The Republic of the Philippines (“ROP”) and ROP Sukuk Trust’s issuance of their US$1bn sukuk due 2029, using an innovative hybrid Ijara, Wakala and Murabaha structure.
  • the establishment of Energy Development Oman SAOC’s Trust Certificate Issuance Programme and concurrent issue of US$1bn series 1. trust certificates due 2033.
  • a banking and financial services company on Lendlease Europe Finance PLC’s issue of a tender offer to the holders of the outstanding 3.50 % fixed rate green notes due 2033.
  • the managers in connection with the issue of AUD 250bn 4.625% exchangeable notes due 2027 by Seven Group Holdings Limited and a concurrent on-market reverse bookbuild buyback of AUD 114.2m of its outstanding AUD 350m 2.20% convertible notes due 2025. 
  • the issue of €500m 7.125% guaranteed subordinated notes due 9 November 2083 by APA Group (first issuance of corporate hybrid securities by an Australian corporate for two years).
  • the arrangers and dealers on the concurrent establishment of a US$10bn euro medium term note programme and a US$5bn multicurrency sukuk issuance programme (plus concurrent issuance under each programme) by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Malaysia.

Education and qualifications

Phill studied modern languages at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford.
