Telecommunications standards, enabling interoperability of devices, are key in the digitalization of the world and the development of the Internet of Things.  

Such development crystalizes the opposition between the need of a widespread use of interoperability standards (e.g. LTE, 5G, Wifi) and the rights of holders of standard essential patents (SEPs), which cover inventions or technologies deemed necessary for complying with the standards.
