Linklaters launches first of its kind online legal internship open to all UK students
- New Inside Sherpa platform gives UK students the opportunity to work for the global firm through a virtual reality platform
- Linklaters is first law firm and first UK company to offer the Inside Sherpa platform which is open to students all over the UK from any university with any degree
- New digital internship is free to join and will help students from any background to access the profession
This month Linklaters will be the first City firm to work with a first of its kind online internship that will allow students from anywhere in the UK to experience working at a global law firm. The Inside Sherpa platform offers free online internships where students can interact with virtual clients and colleagues in a way that replicates the day-to-day work of Linklaters.
The platform allows students from any university, background or degree to undertake a series of tasks and modules which replicates the type of work they would do on a Vacation Scheme or Training Contract with Linklaters. Students will receive video instructions from partners, access resources to help with the tasks and submit work that reflects day to day responsibilities of a commercial lawyer.
The platform uses e-learning style technology to achieve this and provides model answers, so students can self-mark their work. One feature includes the chance for students to leave a voicemail for a client and then listen back to a recording from one of the firm’s partners to learn how a commercial lawyer would interact with a client on a deal or matter.
“We are the first law firm in the UK to launch this virtual internship as part of our commitment to improving social mobility in the City. We know that a simple lack of awareness of what life is like at firms like Linklaters is often one of the biggest barriers preventing otherwise strong candidates from applying to join. We hope this new virtual platform will give students a taste of what it’s really like to experience the day to day work of a City firm and inspire them to find out more. The programme links our investment in innovation and agility with our commitment to providing applicants from any background, university or degree with an insight into our work and the tangible skills they need to succeed at Linklaters.”
The programme is free for students to undertake and is aimed at increasing access to the City profession to students from any background or location. The platform launched in Australia last year and has been extremely successful in gaining traction with employers, students and universities. It has also recently launched in the US and Linklaters is now spearheading the UK launch.
