The best ideas always come from our people. As part of our strategy to encourage our people to familiarise themselves with the technology and test different uses of GenAI for themselves, we ran a global ideas campaign in the spring of 2023. The aim was to gather ideas from across the firm – across seniorities, roles and geographies - on how to apply this technology in their day to day. As always, there was no shortage of great ideas, and we’re now working our way through implementing those ideas, working with a range of technology partners to do that.
Linklaters has its own GenAI chatbot which enables everyone in the firm to explore how this technology works. Our chatbot has been built using Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service which means that our prompts and responses are kept within a secure environment. The chatbot is evolving as we add new features and try out new use cases. To help people get the best from this technology we have been delivering training on prompt engineering across the firm.
Legal Knowledge Search
GenAI has the potential to revolutionise legal knowledge search capabilities as you can ask natural language questions about information held in knowledge repositories and document management systems. Rather than using complex search terms and filters, GenAI enables you to get an easy to digest, quick response based on a review of thousands of documents. To make the most of the incredible power of GenAI search, we are working with Google’s Cloud Vertex AI platform to improve the speed and accuracy of our search capabilities.
We have run a global pilot of CoCounsel by Casetext which uses GenAI to help lawyers with some typical tasks such as summarising documents, preparing witness statements, extracting contract data and completing legal research.
We have collaborated with Microsoft to trial its 365 Copilot platform. Microsoft launched an early adoption programme which Linklaters became a part of in August 2023; the pilot will last initially for one year.
