Overview

Phil specialises in real estate finance, with a particular focus on development and highly-levered, structured transactions. 

Phil advises lenders (including banks and funds) and borrowers on all types of UK and cross-border real estate finance transactions, and has acted on highly complex, structured portfolio financings and restructurings. Phil spent a year on secondment at M&G Investments in 2016 sitting with the Real Estate Finance team.

Work highlights

Phil has been the lead advisor for his clients on a number of major transactions, including:

  • Cale Street Partners: advising funds advised by Cale Street Partners as lenders in respect of the financing of the £430m acquisition of the Fenwick Department Store on Bond Street, London. 
  • AustralianSuper/Argent: advising the sponsors on the £1bn refinancing of the Kings Cross/Coal Drops Yard site.
  • Allianz Real Estate: advising funds on the £500m financing of the acquisition and mixed-use development of 105 Victoria Street, London (the site of the former House of Fraser department store). 
  • A sovereign fund: advising the junior lender in respect of a €385m mezzanine financing for the acquisition of a large portfolio of Spanish residential properties.
  • Permodalan Nasional Berhad and Employees Provident Fund (Malaysia): advising the sponsors on the £1.1bn development financing of the Battersea Power Station.
  • M&G: advising the lenders in relation to a £300m (senior and mezzanine) investment and acquisition facility secured on a portfolio of properties in Mayfair.
  • Steinhoff: advising the company in relation to the distressed restructuring of its propco group financing.

Professional experience

Phil regularly presents at Loan Market Association (LMA) events on the subject of real estate finance documentation and terms.

Education and qualifications

Phil studied law at the University of Birmingham.
