Overview
John represents U.S. and international clients in all phases of the merger review process and advises on a broad range of antitrust and regulatory issues related to cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and other business arrangements. He also counsels clients on enforcement and compliance matters related to cartels, monopolization / abuse of dominance, vertical restraints, and other antitrust law issues. John has a particular focus on guiding clients through complex global antitrust issues facing clients in innovative industries, including the technology, financial services, and pharmaceutical sectors.
John has previously supported clients from Linklaters’ Beijing office and has co-authored several articles on the Chinese Anti-Monopoly Law, including Best Asian Antitrust Business Article at the 2016 Concurrences Antitrust Writing Awards.
Work highlights
- Linde AG: advising on its US$90bn merger of equals with Praxair Inc.
- Deutsche Börse AG: advising on its proposed mergers with NYSE Euronext and the London Stock Exchange.
- Novartis: advising on its strategic portfolio transformation, including the acquisition of GSK’s global oncology business and the salesof its vaccines businesses to GSK and CSL.
- ThyssenKrupp: advising on the sale of its US steel business to a consortium of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel.
- A generic pharmaceutical company: advising on a criminal cartel investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
- A consortium of financial institutions: advising on the development of an innovative financial services platform.
Professional experience
John is Vice Chair of the Antitrust Law Committee for the American Bar Association Section of International Law. He was previously Law Clerk to the Hon. William H. Walls, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey.
Education and qualifications
John holds a Juris Doctor, James Kent Scholar, from Columbia Law School, and a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Dartmouth College.
