Overview

Karris specialises in international commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and public international law.

He has extensive experience in resolving his client's most complex and important issues. He has represented clients in a wide range of industries, including energy, utilities, water, mining, infrastructure, finance, agriculture, technology and telecoms.

Karris has acted for clients in international commercial arbitrations under the LCIA Rules. He has expertise in acting and advising on investment arbitrations and public international law matters, involving various international investment treaties and jurisdictions. This includes advising on investment structures in emerging markets and issues regarding the enforcement of arbitral awards.

Karris has a wealth of English litigation experience, acting for multinationals before the Competition Appeal Tribunal, English High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

Work highlights

Karris’ recent matters include:

  • Acting for a South Asian State in proceedings seeking the annulment of an ICSID award arising out of a mining concession (approx. award value USD 6 billion).
  • Acting for a technology sector client in a USD 1 billion LCIA arbitration arising out of an asset disposal.
  • Acting for high-net-worth individuals in an LCIA arbitration potentially exceeding US$100m in relation to the disposal of an industrial agricultural business.
  • Acting for a Middle Eastern oil and gas company in a USD 3.5 million LCIA arbitration arising out of a sale of goods involving complex issues on the recoverability of hedging transactions losses.
  • Acting for a Middle Eastern TV broadcasting company in a LCIA arbitration in London arising out of an alleged breach of warranties following the acquisition of a digital pay-TV platform.
  • Acting for a range of energy, utilities and water companies on the protection of their investments under public international law.

Karris is an active member of the international arbitration community. He is a member of the YIAG, ICC YAAF and VYAP organisations.

Education and qualifications

Karris holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Warwick. He completed his GDL, LPC and MSc in Law, Business and Management at the University of Law in Moorgate, London.
