Overview

José Maria Gonçalves Pereira is an Associate in the Lisbon Litigation, Arbitration & Investigations Department. His practice has focused on litigation and arbitration, notably on commercial and corporate disputes and banking & financial litigation.

José Maria assists domestic and international clients such as banks, investment funds, audit firms, asset management firms and corporate clients, that operate in the financial sector, tourism & retail real estate, infrastructure and the insurance sector in contentious work such as shareholders disputes and corporate restructuring, preventive work, such as internal investigations, and competition law infringement proceedings.

Furthermore, he has experience in advisory work in Corporate Law, M&A, and compliance matters, such as advising clients on white collar crime and anti-money laundering and countering of financing of terrorism (AML & CFT) matters.

Professional experience

José Maria started his legal career in 2018 as Junior Associate at the Lisbon office of Linklaters and he became Associate of Linklaters Lisbon in 2021, working in its Litigation, Arbitration & Investigations Department.

Furthermore, José Maria has been a Guest Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon since 2019, teaching Private Law, such as General Theory of Civil Law and Introduction to Law.

Education and qualifications

José Maria holds a Law Degree of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (2018), and attended a Summer course in European Law, at King´s College, London, UK (2016) and an Intensive Course in Company Law at the University of Lisbon (2017).

While studying for his Law Degree, José Maria was a Tutor of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, and he participated in the Willem C. Vis International Arbitration Moot, representing the team of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (2017/2018).
