Overview

Markus heads our German environmental and planning law practice. He specialises on permitting procedures for industrial and infrastructure projects, regularly advises on relevant aspects in transactions, joint ventures and project financings and assists clients on EHS compliances topics. A further focus lies on advising on climate change related matters in the course of the energy turnaround and the necessary transformation of businesses models.

He has been named for many years as a leading environmental lawyer in JUVE, Chambers Legal, Legal 500 and Who is Who legal.

Work highlights
  • TenneT, 50Hertz Transmission, Amprion: advising on planning procedures for the expansion of their transmission power grids (e.g. comprehensive advice on SuedLink, SuedOstLink and Korridor B, Europe’s largest HVDC power cables).
  • Several offshore wind farm developers: advising on permitting procedures and environmental law matters with respect to offshore wind farms in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
  • Various energy companies: advising on planning and permitting procedures for power plants and related infrastructures.
  • Several mining companies: advising on various mining law issues (e.g. operating plan procedures, security deposits, mining royalties).
  • Various companies: advising on EHS compliance requirements and administrative investigation procedures.

Professional experience

Markus joined Linklaters in 2010 as a counsel and was appointed partner in 2014. Before joining Linklaters, he has worked several years for another magic circle firm. Since 2012, Markus is also lecturer on planning law at the University of Halle-Wittenberg.

Education and qualifications

Markus studied law at the University of Kiel. He also holds a Master of Law in Environmental, Planning and Regulatory Law from Nottingham Trent University and is a certified specialist lawyer for administrative law (Fachanwalt für Verwaltungsrecht).

He speaks German and English.

Published works

Markus regularly gives lectures and workshops on environmental and planning law aspects. He also regularly publishes in German and English-language journals and commentaries on his practical fields of expertise (e.g. on planning approval law, emission control law, water law, nature conservation law and climate change aspects).
