Overview

Marcos advises international and domestic corporates, financial institutions, private equity firms and a variety of funds and alternative investment providers on a wide range of corporate and private equity transactions.

His expertise includes cross-border mergers, private equity deals, privatisations, restructurings, joint ventures and leveraged acquisitions. Marcos’ personal experience and professional track record spans many different industries, economic and business sectors, including financial institutions, insurance, healthcare, energy & infrastructure and TMT sectors. He has also advised on several M&A transactions in Lusophone Africa.

Marcos has headed the Corporate practice in the firm’s Lisbon office since 2016 and is the national managing partner of Portugal’s operations. He was seconded to the firm’s London office private equity practice in 2007.

He has been ranked by Chambers in corporate/M&A and private equity for several years, being praised for his “hands-on and pragmatic approach”.


Work highlights

Marcos has led on, or been a key adviser in, many major corporate transactions. These include advising:

 

  • Magnum Industrial Partners and other co-investors on the €1bn sale of Iberwind, Portugal’s renewable energy company, one of a number of related transactions
  • The Linde Group on the €590m acquisition of Air Products' Continental European homecare business
  • Santander Consumer Group on the set-up of a contractual partnership between BSCP and Banque PSA Finance (the car financing arm of Peugeot) to provide wholesale and retail finance in 11 European countries
  • ECS - Sociedade de Capital de Risco on the €1bn restructuring of CS Hotels, Golf & Resorts Group, the largest corporate and balance sheet restructuring in Portugal involving judicial proceedings
  • AXA on the sale of its Portuguese business

 

Professional experience

Marcos is regularly asked to chair or otherwise provide support to shareholders’ meetings.

 

He occasionally speaks at conferences and seminars on the subject of corporate finance and private equity acquisitions.

Education and qualifications

Marcos studied law at the Catholic University of Lisbon Law School.

 

He speaks Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and German.
