Linklaters sets a new record with the Bloomberg Clean Energy League Tables with $20bn for 2020

Linklaters has taken the top spot in BloombergNEF’s Clean Energy League Table rankings for 2020. The deals (attributed by Bloomberg) that we advised on last year aggregate to over US$20 billion of new build investment in the renewable sector. Apart from being a new “personal best”, this is a world record for a law firm in Bloomberg’s Clean Energy league tables. We are also delighted that this top ranking builds on the same result in Bloomberg’s 2019 league table, meaning we have topped the ranking three times in the last five years, showing our long-term commitment to the sector.

The first modern renewables project financing (not counting large hydro) that Linklaters acted on was in 1991, raising a grand total of US$37.5 million for the financing of two wind farms in the UK. To have witnessed that grow over thirty years and spread to cover the whole of Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia has been the most exciting journey and a real privilege for all of us who have had a part in it. We are indebted to our clients for the opportunities they have brought and support they have shown us, and hope that we have matched their commitment to leading and innovating the new developments in the sector and in particular, energy transition projects, at every turn.

We are currently advising on a range of projects encompassing the full remit of energy transition work across the globe, drawing on the strength of our wider Energy and Infrastructure practice, recently named Global Law Firm of the Year by PFI Awards 2020. As we look forward, we are excited by the further opportunities presented by the drive to Net Zero, including the completion of the renewable journey or the opening up of the hydrogen economy. This is an important year for the sector and we share the hopes of many of our clients for a clear direction and renewed impetus coming out of COP 26.
