Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the offshore wind industry in Japan recently achieved several significant milestones.

First public auction launched

On 24 June 2020, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (“METI”) and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (“MLIT”) launched the first offshore wind public auction under the Marine Renewables Energy Act.


Further promising areas

The four previously “potential promotion areas” were advanced to promising areas in July 2020, and three more areas were added to “areas at a certain preparatory stage”.

First public-private council

The first meeting of the public private council was convened in July 2020 with a focus to discuss longer-term targets to enhance investments in the offshore wind sector.

Other round 1 projects

Choshi Promotion Area, Noshiro Promotion Area, and Yurihonjo Promotion area have been designated as “Promotion Areas”, and its draft public auction guidelines are expected to be released for public consultation in September 2020.
