He has knowledgeable experience in all areas of protected information including data protection law, professional secrets such as banking secrecy, exchange secrecy and the protection of business and trade secrets.

Furthermore, he has specialised experience in the field of digitalization – also in the automotive industry – including Big Data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, blockchain, software development, licensing and maintenance as well as the various forms of nearshoring and offshoring. He also advises on issues relating to the set-up and implementation of compliance and data protection management systems.

Daniel is co-publisher and co-author of Paal / Pauly, commentary on the General Data Protection Regulation and the German Federal Data Protection Act, issued by Verlag C.H.Beck.

Daniel is listed as one of the “most renowned lawyers for compliance” in Germany (WirschaftsWoche 2019).

Work highlights

Daniel has led on many of the German market’s most significant IT and outsourcing transactions. These include advising:

  • various corporations from different sectors on the global implementation of the requirements of the GDPR
  • Bayer on separation of its entire IT landscape and transitional service agreements on the occasion of the divestiture of its material science business (Covestro)
  • a leading OEM on the legal framework of driverless cars 
  • a leading automotive supplier on the reorganisation of its general terms of business and supply agreements in Europe
  • one of the Big Four Accounting Firms on the global implementation of a Workday cloud solution (sec. 203 StGB-relevant)
  • the association of German damage insurance companies on all aspects of telematics and autonomous driving

Professional experience

Daniel is a member of the German Association for Law and Information Technology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Recht und Informatik).

Daniel frequently writes in legal journals and speaks at seminars on IT and data privacy. He is the co-publisher of Datenschutz-Grundverordnung, published by C.H. Beck in October 2016, the first comprehensive commentary on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for the German market.

Education and qualifications

Daniel studied law and political science at the University of Bonn, the Institute of Political Sciences of Aix-en-Provence (France) and the University of Constance, before completing a doctorate in law at the University of Oldenburg.
