Linklaters has announced the appointment of Philip Goss, Pensions Partner in the firm’s London office, as Head of its Global Pensions Practice, with immediate effect. He succeeds Claire Petheram, who recently completed her eight-year term leading the practice.
Philip has significant experience advising trustees, corporates and insurers on all areas of pensions law. His expertise spans de-risking buy-in and buy-out transactions, end-game planning, scheme mergers, liability mitigation, investment matters, scheme funding negotiations and arrangements, stressed schemes, and corporate transactions and restructurings.
Philip advises trustees and sponsors of major pension schemes, leading on many high-profile cases. His experience includes the Co-operative Pension Scheme’s full buy-in of all £8 billion of liabilities across multiple de-risking transactions with Rothesay, Aviva and PIC, the establishment of a new £6 billion+ pension scheme for Cadent Gas, and the settlement of the BHS Pension Scheme with the Pensions Regulator.
Simon Branigan, Linklaters’ Global Head of Corporate, commented: “It has been a pleasure working with Claire in this role. She has done an amazing job, and we’d like to thank her for her dedication and her relentless drive and ambition for the pensions practice. I look forward to working closely with Phil as he continues to further strengthen our top pensions capabilities globally.”
Linklaters’ Pensions practice is one of the leading pensions teams, consistently ranked by clients and legal directories as top tier, including Tier 1 in Legal 500 UK and Band 1 in Chambers UK. In 2025, the practice advised on investment mandates with a value of over £24 billion, litigation matters with a total value of over £10 billion, £9.9 billion of de-risking transactions, and pensions arrangements for 38 FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies.
