Overview

Jason is a Managing Associate in the Litigation, Arbitration and Investigations team in London, specialising in competition damages claims and sports regulatory issues.

He has more than a decade’s experience defending complex and high value competition damages claims, and has represented corporate clients before the High Court, Competition Appeal Tribunal, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

He has acted on the cross-border merchant interchange fee litigation for many years, including coordinating strategies against parallel claims in multiple jurisdictions, and defending proceedings at trial. Jason also has extensive experience of defending clients before the Competition Appeal Tribunal in significant and funded competition class actions.

He has also acted for defendants in a broad range of sectors, including finance, technology, pharmaceuticals, mining and utilities.

Jason has been a leading member of Linklaters’ sports sector since its launch in 2019. Jason specialises in advising clients on complex sports regulatory matters, including governance, disciplinary, contractual and competition law issues. Jason has acted for a range of stakeholders from sports governing bodies, to teams and broadcasters, and for clients in football, Formula One, tennis, cricket and sailing.

Experience

Jason’s recent matters include:

Acting for a leading payment scheme in relation to numerous “standalone” litigation proceedings brought by major retailers alleging that multilateral interchange fees on card transactions were levied in breach of Article 101 and Article 102 TFEU (and various domestic competition laws) across the High Court and the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
Advising a utilities company in its successful defence of collective proceedings brought on behalf of consumers in the Competition Appeal Tribunal concerning the alleged misleading of regulators in connection with wastewater spillages
Defending a global technology company in collective proceedings alleging abuse of dominance in the market for cloud services.
Advising a global technology company on its defence of a class action alleging abuse of dominance relating to operation of its digital store.
Advising a large pharmaceuticals company in relation to an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority into alleged breaches of competition law regarding the supply of certain medications.
Advising a utilities company in successfully resisting a novel competition law argument raised in the context of a proposed restructuring plan.
Advising the Premier League in relation to various regulatory, contentious and competition law issues.
Advising a Formula One team on sporting regulatory and contractual issues.
Advising a global broadcaster in relation to complex contractual issues flowing from the potential postponement or cancellation of a number of sporting events.

Beyond the Office

Jason is a well-recognised and regular speaker at seminars on both competition law and sports regulatory issues and a regular contributor to podcasts and publications.

During his career at Linklaters, Jason has been seconded to the Premier League’s legal and regulatory team, as well as to a large multinational bank’s litigation and investigations team.

Jason is recognised as a Key Lawyer in the Legal 500 (Competition Litigation).
