Experience

Julian is one of Linklaters' global Telecommunications, Media and Technology sector leaders. He has a wide practice encompassing regulatory and commercial telecoms work, all aspects of information governance, IT and outsourcing contracts, e-commerce and media work. His particular focus is working in highly regulated industries such as telecoms, financial services, professional services, utilities and the public sector, where he can combine his regulatory and commercial contracts expertise.

In recent years he has advised many global telecommunications companies on their expansion strategies into emerging markets and on operational optimisation strategies such as outsourcing and infrastructure sharing.

Recent transactions include advising:

  • Zain on the sale of its African mobile telecommunications business in 15 jurisdictions to Bharti Airtel Limited for an enterprise value of US$10.7 billion
  • Harbinger on the proposed acquisition of Inmarsat’s global satellite business and the acquisition of Augere’s emerging markets broadband operations
  • JPMorgan on its international data protection compliance strategy, including its recent binding corporate rules approval
  • Lloyds Banking Group on the information governance and technology aspects of most of its recent large scale transactions
  • Vodafone on the €4bn outsourcing of its application development and management functions for key IT systems in an initial 13 countries to IBM and EDS involving contractual arrangements for the transfer of most of Vodafone’s application development and management staff to the two suppliers
  • BT on its €1bn, seven-year agreement to manage and develop Unilever’s global communications infrastructure, spanning 100 countries. This involved contractual negotiations and co-ordinating advice from 73 jurisdictions on the optimal corporate and regulatory structure for BT to deliver the outsourced services
  • Six of the world’s leading accounting firms on global information governance issues in more than 60 jurisdictions associated with the firms’ compliance with the reporting obligations pursuant to the Sarbanes Oxley Act
