Overview
Ellie is a Counsel Knowledge Lawyer based in London with over 20 years’ experience at Linklaters. Formerly a client-facing practitioner in the team, Ellie has advised on a broad range of commercial and private trusts, charity law and regulatory matters. As a Knowledge Lawyer, she is now responsible for developing and maintaining the Commercial and Private Trusts team’s best-in-class technical knowledge and current awareness, and delivering tailored internal and client training on a wide variety of technical topics.
Ellie retains a key supporting role in delivering our advice to clients and in particular advises UK charities on establishment, governance and constitutional change, and is a committed contributor to the firm’s pro bono work in this area. Her experience is frequently drawn on by practitioners in other groups across the firm, where trusts and charity law issues meet wider corporate, finance, real estate and pensions mandates.
Experience
- Establishing ground-breaking UK-registered charities, including an organisation providing online access to mental health treatments for refugees and other displaced people globally.
- Supporting a key banking client with governance advice to its charitable foundation.
- Advising the trustees of a large private grant-making charity on a significant restructuring and securing Charity Commission consent to effect this.
- Advising a major charity on accessing funding critical to survival during the Covid-19 period.
- Leading training on the practical impact of increasing AML regulation affecting trusts in a variety of commercial contexts.
- Supporting AML compliance advice on trust structures connected to high-profile individuals.
- Advising on trusts issues in insolvency and restructuring scenarios and in capital markets transactions.
- Delivering training to pension scheme trustees on trust-based vehicles for the provision of death-in-service benefits, including advising on insurance-backed unregistered schemes.
- Advising on trust law and tax issues arising in employee incentives structures.
