Leading the way in the technology race

As early as in 2018, Linklaters made a commitment to actively embrace technological developments in the legal world. We definitely knew that innovation would transform our client service standards, bringing greater speed and efficiency along with sharper data and document management alongside highest quality. Today, our clients are seeing the rewards of our early investment in technology and automation. As the first law firm to collaborate with SNT, we brought together academic expertise with the legal knowledge and skills of our dedicated innovation team. This research partnership was the first step in Linklaters’ strategy of embracing new ideas, technology and tools, followed by many others.

In Luxembourg we have two partners heading our efforts in innovation, Silke Bernard, Global Head of Investment Funds and Catherine Kremer, partner in Corporate and M&A. The breadth and depth of their combined legal and technical knowledge and commercial understanding is critical to Linklaters’ ambitious innovation goals. With Linklaters' overall innovation strategy, we are determined to continue breaking new ground with exciting solutions in a dynamic regulatory landscape.

Silke

“With our deep understanding of our clients’ needs and the business environment in which they operate we work from the ground up, harnessing technology to design smarter ways to think and to build sharper processes every step of the way. And, with technology driving in a new regulatory landscape in areas such as fintech and digital assets, we are already ahead of the game with both our innovative mindset and range of technology tools.”

Laila, our very own GenAI Chatbot

In March 2023 Linklaters launched Laila, our customised generative AI chatbot. Laila offers a robust and safe environment to leverage generative AI capacity within the firm. With strict policies in place to ensure confidentiality and compliance, Laila operates to the highest security standards. Clients may be reassured that our GenAI output provided to them is verified and validated by Linklaters lawyers and professionals.

How does Laila help our clients?

Laila is our alternative to ChatGPT, built on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI platform. Laila provides our people with access to GenAI functionality in a private and secure environment. In the first half of 2024, our office recorded over 45,000 prompts made using the chatbot. Although it is still early days in the adoption of this technology, we are quickly discovering how effective Laila is at enhancing our productivity.
In a recent AI client roundtable, hosted by our innovation partners and supported by our specialist tech team, guests were able to experience Laila in action. This hands-on workshop was designed for all levels of AI knowledge – from novice to experienced. All attendees left with a much greater understanding of the real power of AI and its impact on productivity. One client noted: "The AI event provided a great balance between delivering information and answering our many questions. The knowledge I gained will now influence my approach to AI interactions.

How does Linklaters ensure responsible and transparent use of AI technologies?

Linklaters wishes to be transparent with clients and the public about how it uses AI. We intend to use AI in accordance with the principles set out in our AI Charter. As AI technologies develop, we will continually assess our use of AI and adapt our processes to ensure that our use of AI continues to benefit our clients and our people and remains consistent with our values.

“We prioritise client privacy and data security by offering an opt-out option for data usage with generative AI tools, ensuring that all client information remains private and protected. Today, there are some 2,500 active Laila users across Linklaters raising more than 2,600 queries each day. With Laila in action right across our global network, we can gather invaluable insights into specific regional requirements.”
