COP27

Climate change in the midst of intersecting crises

Global heads of state met in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt on 6-18 November 2022 at COP27, the United Nations climate summit, to discuss more ambitious action to tackle climate change. The world is a very different place now to what it was last year at COP26 – with geopolitical tensions and an energy crisis flowing from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February this year – and the economic turmoil that has ensued. Not surprisingly, energy security, climate finance for developing nations and a “just transition” were at the top of the agenda for world leaders this year. The Linklaters ESG team have been following the negotiations closely and keeping you updated on what this means in practice for corporates and the financial sector across the globe.

If you missed our webinar on 22 November where we discussed what the final outcome of COP27 means for business in different regions across the globe, you can view the recording here.

Key topics to explore

Climate targets across the globe

We have gathered together the key climate targets for a number of countries across the globe in the lead up to COP27. Explore the key climate targets in the relevant jurisdictions by selecting a pin on the map. You can zoom in using the plus/minus symbols on the bottom left of the map.
These targets reflect what appears in countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and other public commitments. The map is not intended to reflect all countries that have submitted an NDC – it is a selection of countries.
The information has been gathered from a variety of sources, including the Climate Action Tracker and Africa NDC Hub, among others. The information is accurate as at 14/10/22 but please note that some countries may decide to submit revised NDCs in the lead up to, or during, COP27.
