Overview

Atif focuses on intellectual property work in a transactional context, particularly for industrials, healthcare and technology clients. He guides clients through the full spectrum of IP issues on high value corporate transactions for both buyers and sellers, corporate restructurings, joint ventures and complex IP licensing structures. Atif is also at the forefront of advising on IP challenges arising from artificial intelligence and is highly experienced in national and international patent litigation.

Experience

Carrier Global Corporation: advising on the long-term patent and IP license agreements in the context of (i) the sale of its global commercial refrigeration business to Haier, (ii) the €12bn acquisition of Viessmann Climate Solutions, (iii) the sale of the Global Access Solutions security business to Honeywell, (iv) the US$1.425bn sale of the global industrial fire protection business "Industrial Fire" to Sentinel Capital Partners and (v) the US$430m sale of its Riello business to Ariston Group.
Sandoz: advising on all IP aspects in connection with the strategic agreement with Evotec SE to acquire all issued and outstanding equity interests of Just-Evotec Biologics EU SAS which encompasses Just-Evotec’s Toulouse manufacturing site, including negotiating an indefinite technology licence agreement for Just-Evotec’s continuous manufacturing platform for biosimilars.
ams Osram: advising on all IP issues in connection with the €570m partial sale of its sensor business to Infineon Technologies AG and negotiating patent licence agreements.
STADA Arzneimittel: advising on several acquisitions of consumer healthcare brands from Sanofi, in particular negotiating several IP agreements, including IP transfer and (back) licence agreements, and advising on IP related issues in connection with dossiers, marketing authorizations and inventory and contract manufacturing.
McKesson: advising on all IP aspects of the sale of its European businesses, including negotiating licence agreements in the context of the sale of major parts of its pharmaceutical wholesale and pharmacy business to PHOENIX Pharmahandel, as well as on the IP aspects in the context of the disposals of its Norwegian business to NorgesGruppen, its UK business to AURELIUS, its Danish business to Erhvervsinvest Management and its Austrian business to Quadrifolia Management.
Vitesco Technologies: advising and negotiating several IP agreements with OEMs as part of Vitesco Technologies’ supply relationships.
TricorBraun: advising on all IP and design law issues in relation to the acquisition of Euroglas and Glaspack from IGM Holding.
Seoul Semiconductor: advising on several patent infringement proceedings based on multiple patents relating to a core invention in the field of white light LEDs, including before the Düsseldorf Regional Court.

Beyond the Office

Atif is a member of the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRUR) and the German Association of Intellectual Property Experts (VPP). He teaches patent law at the Heilbronn university and is a regular speaker at IP conferences.

Recognition

Atif is recognised as a leading IP lawyer in various legal directories. He has been named a “Rising Star” by IP Stars 2025, awarded the title “Lawyer of the Future” for IP by German Handelsblatt 2024, and is ranked in the bronze band by IAM Patent 1000 for 2025.

IAM Patent states that Atif “is appreciated for his ability to get to grips with the technical intricacies of matters and provide sound, reliable counsel as a result” and that he is a “seasoned litigator whose technical acumen and pragmatic approach have proven indispensable to his following.”

Education and Qualifications

Atif studied law at the University of Passau and Cardiff University. He holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property (LL.M. IP) from Queen Mary University of London.

He speaks German and English.
