David has been based in Indonesia for eight years and practices principally in the energy, resources and infrastructure, mergers & acquisitions and general corporate and commercial fields. Chambers Asia- Pacific notes that David is 'singled out for his depth of knowledge on all matters relating to doing business in South East Asia‘. A partner with Linklaters, David is currently on secondment as Senior Foreign Legal Advisor with our alliance firm, Widyawan & Partners, in Jakarta.

His recent Indonesian oil & gas, energy and resources experience includes advising:

  • Inpex Masela on the development and financing of its LNG project in Masela Block, East Indonesian waters, originally proposed as an FLNG project
  • Pertamina on its acquisition of ExxonMobil's LNG and upstream assets in the province of Aceh, Indonesia
  • Hess Corporation on the Indonesian aspects of its divestment of its Indonesian assets, including its Pangkah, Natuna and Semai V PSCs
  • PT Pertamina Hulu Energi in connection with its acquisition of Anadarko's participating  interests in the Nunukan, Bukat and Ambalat blocks
  • PT Pertamina (Persero) in its various plans to upgrade its existing refineries, as well as the development of a new refinery under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) regulatory framework and a further new refinery in Tuban
  • PT Pertamina (Persero) and its affiliates on its existing and proposed regasification projects in Indonesia, including the Mahakam Block and the Bontang LNG Plant 
  • Marubeni on its investment in the Rantau Dedap geothermal power project 
  • Inpex Corporation on its investment in the Sarulla geothermal power project 
  • the sponsors on the c$1bn ECA/IFI financing of a LNG receiving terminal in South East Asia
  • Consortium on a current bid on Jawa 1 project (1,600 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbin Power Plant located in West Java)
  • China Development Bank, as lenders, on the project development and financing of the Jawa 7 IPP Project (2 x 1000 MW Coal Fired Power Plant located in Banten Province)

David’s recent experience in relation to corporate M&A in Indonesia includes:

  • Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation on its US$1.56bn acquisition of a stake in PT Bank Tabungan Pensiunan Nasional Tbk (PT BTPN), the largest investment by a Japanese bank into South East Asia at the time and the largest ever FIG M&A deals in Indonesia
  • Sompo Japan Insurance on the Indonesian aspects of its merger with Nipponkoa Insurance
  • ACE insurance on its acquisition of PT Asuransi Jaya Proteksi
  • IAG on its acquisition of a controlling interest in PT Asuransi Parolamas
