John is the Asia Head of Energy & Infrastructure and the Managing Partner of our Tokyo office. John is a projects specialist with over 20 years’ experience advising project sponsors, ECAs/IFIs, commercial banks, trading and utility companies on the full range of project development, financing and M&A transactions in the energy, utilities and infrastructure sectors. John is ranked as a "Leading Individual" in major legal directories including the 2018 Chambers and Legal 500 directories, and is described as "very experienced but also very approachable and very good in assisting the negotiation position and formulating strategy", who leads a team of specialists referred to as "'one of the most committed and knowledgeable groups in the market', Linklaters' 'reliable and in-depth experience' in outbound project finance matters 'stands out among the rest'".

Some of John’s recent transactions include advising:

  • The Japanese-led consortium on its bid for Equis’ Asia-Pacific renewables portfolio;
  • The ECA/IFIs and commercial bank lenders on the US$5bn Nacala pit-to-port project in sub-Sahara Africa;
  • The ECA/IFI and commercial lenders on the financing of the Morupule B Units 5-6 IPP in Botswana; 
  • The ECA/IFI lenders on a solar IPP in East Africa;
  • The Sponsors on a c.$1bn ECA/IFI financing of an LNG receiving terminal in South East Asia;
  • Bidders on each of the Fukuoka and Hokkaido Japan airport privatisations;
  • An international owner and operator of entertainment facilities on its proposal to develop one of the new Integrated Resorts in Japan; 
  • JBIC/NEXI and commercial lenders on a number of Middle East I(W)PPs including Mirfa IWPP, Rabigh 2 IWPP, Qurrayat IWP and the Al Abdaliyah integrated solar combined cycle IPP;
  • Lenders and Sponsors on various Japan renewables financings including the Oita, Sano and Nagi solar PV projects;
  • A short-listed Japanese and Korean consortium on an integrated LNG receiving terminal and FSRU project and ECA financing in Bahrain;
  • Marubeni Corporation on its acquisition of a 49.9% interest in the Gunfleet Sands windfarm in the UK and NEXI financing; and
  • The project sponsors (including Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation) on the Sakhalin II LNG project.
