Overview

Matt specialises in international commercial arbitration, with experience in disputes ranging across the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Africa, Russia and the United Kingdom. He has acted on a number of disputes arising from joint ventures and IT projects.

Matt has acted on arbitrations under the rules of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the DIFC-LCIA Arbitration Centre, and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), including appearing as counsel. He also advises on High Court litigation, including matters relating to arbitration proceedings.

Matt advises on mitigating ESG disputes risk.

Work highlights

Matt’s recent matters include: 

  • Representing an international investment company in an LCIA arbitration between joint venture partners concerning a substantial transport and logistics company involving claims in excess of USD 350 million.
  • Representing an Asia-Pacific construction contractor in disputes arising between shareholders in a Middle Eastern company, and with respect to related local court proceedings.
  • Representing a Hong Kong listed mining company in an HKIAC arbitration commenced by an international mining company concerning the ownership and operations of a mine project in Africa.
  • Advising a large corporate on claims against a supplier in relation to the failure of a significant information technology (IT) project.
  • Acting for the administrators of Bulb on the UK’s first energy supply company administration under the Energy Act.
  • Advising international financial institutions on ESG disputes risks.

Professional experience

Prior to joining Linklaters, Matt worked at a New Zealand law firm and appeared as sole and junior counsel before the New Zealand courts. He was also a judges clerk (judicial assistant) in the High Court of New Zealand.

Education and qualifications

Matt holds a Master of Laws (LLM) from Harvard Law School. He graduated with an LLB (First Class Honours) and BA (Politics) from the University of Otago, New Zealand.
