Overview

Madeline specialises in international arbitration and commercial litigation. She has experience acting in a wide spectrum of commercial disputes, with particular experience in commodities, construction, and financial services disputes. Having lived and worked abroad for most of her career, she has the linguistic ability and cultural sensitivity of managing large cross-border disputes.

While at Linklaters, Madeline went on secondment to the Free Representation Unit to work as a solicitor-advocate. In this role, she brought various employment law cases on behalf of pro bono clients to be heard before the Employment Tribunal. She has also undertaken a secondment to Linklaters’ Litigation, Arbitration & Investigations team in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining Linklaters, Madeline worked in the debt restructuring unit of a major UK bank. She also has previous work experience in the United States and Hong Kong (in the case of the latter, including experience at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre).

  • A major international commodities trading company: representing in a USD200m HKIAC arbitration against a PRC state-owned enterprise.
  • A major oil refinery: representing in a USD4bn SIAC arbitration against a consortium of contractors in relation to the construction of a refinery in Thailand.
  • A major UK housebuilder: representing in High Court proceedings against a major competitor for claims relating to breach of confidence.
  • A major UK bank: representing in High Court proceedings against an asset management company for claims relating to front-running.
  • Administrators of the Lehman Brothers: advising in relation to continuing issues and claims following the bank’s collapse in September 2008.

Professional experience

Madeline maintains an active pro bono practice as a voluntary Honorary Legal Adviser to the RCJ Citizens Advice Bureau, a role which involves providing advice to individual clients encountering a broad range of matters in the courts of England and Wales. She is also involved in a number of other pro bono initiatives, including with Reprieve and Amicus.

Education and qualifications

Madeline holds a Master of Arts in Law (first class honours) from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (summa cum laude) from Amherst College.
