At Linklaters, our approach to AI is not simply about adopting new technology. It is about shaping it around our lawyers, our knowledge and, ultimately, the outcomes we deliver for clients. Our work with Legora shows what that looks like in practice.
Over the past year, our lawyers, AI specialists and technology teams have worked closely with Legora to shape its platform around real legal work, exploring how AI can help us solve complex client problems differently.
Since deployment, our lawyers around the world have collectively spent more than 35 years on the platform. Following the rollout of Legora Agent, 97% of weekly active users were using Agent within its first month.
As Kris Sales, product owner for Legora, says: “I don't think we've ever had a technology product become so popular so quickly.”
More important than the numbers is what lawyers are doing with it.
Legora Agent enables lawyers to start with the outcome they want to achieve and apply their expertise and judgement to open up opportunities to rethink established ways of working.
In structured finance, for example, partners can use Agent to carry out an initial review of transaction documents and identify key issues earlier. They can give clients an initial steer sooner, while the wider team continues the detailed review.
As Partner and co-founder of Applied Intelligence Tom Quoroll explains: “It's actually the opportunity to rethink how we delegate the work, how we offer something to the client which is different in terms of experience from the way that we've done it before, something that's of greater value.”
Rather than simply making an existing process faster, AI can change the shape of the process and improve the client experience.
It reflects a broader principle behind our AI strategy: technology is most powerful when combined with what is distinctive about Linklaters. As Tom puts it: “Our knowledge is our differentiator.”
Bringing our knowledge and experience together with AI makes more of the firm's collective experience available to lawyers when they need it, helping them identify insights and apply them to client problems.
We are also helping shape what comes next for Legora. Through our relationship with Legora, our teams provide feedback on the platform and are testing new capabilities such as Skills, exploring how our knowledge and ways of working can be built more directly into the technology.
That co-engineering mattered from the outset. Sarah Barnard, Director of AI Delivery, says Legora's willingness to explore questions such as how to measure ROI was an early indication that “this was a relationship that would grow with us”.
