For Lars Küpper, it was the prospect of working closely with people, whether they were colleagues or clients, which played a large part in his decision about his future profession. “Both my father and grandfather had been doctors but I was always more attracted by the teamwork that seemed to exist in law,” he reflects. “There was also the fact that law seemed to demand such a range of different skills that I would have a lot more choices about what I decided to do in the end.”

A typical degree for a prospective German lawyer at the University of Cologne was followed by an altogether rarer destination for Lars’s Master’s course. “I thought about London and I was also interested in Edinburg but I knew that Durham University had a good reputation and I liked the idea of being in a proper university town with fewer students,” …
