Linklaters crystallises sport sector experience with establishment of new sector group

Linklaters today announces the establishment of a cross-practice Sports sector group to better serve its clients and to make the most of the opportunities that exist in this exciting and rapidly evolving area.

The firm already has deep experience and understanding of the sector, having acted for clubs, governing bodies and external investors and stakeholders throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America on a range of corporate/M&A transactions, financings and securitisations and sports-related contentious, regulatory and commercial matters.

Tom Lambert, co-lead of the Sports sector group, commented:

“The increasing scale and complexity of transactions and matters within the sector provides us with a real opportunity to expand our client-base by leveraging our already extensive experience in the sector and utilising our global presence and multi-practice capabilities. It is our intention to become recognised within the sector as a market-leading firm which advises and provides a full end-to-end service on the most intricate and high-profile transactional, regulatory and contentious matters.”

The cross-practice Sports Group will be led by Corporate Partner Iain Wagstaff, Finance Partner Julian Davies, Dispute Resolution Partner Tom Cassels and Corporate Managing Associate Tom Lambert.

The establishment of this sector group has been driven by a recognition that the Sports industry is at the forefront of digital and technological development and consumer engagement. In particular, the opportunity for significant returns from media and advertising exposure and audience participation is attracting increasingly more sophisticated investors and stakeholders who require innovative legal solutions to often complex issues.

Given the extent to which technological innovation is rapidly transforming the Sports sector, including the development of areas such as eSports and the increased monetisation of sports data and content, the group will also draw on the firm’s Fintech and Technology sector expertise to provide its clients with the most relevant and up to date advice in the market.
